Roman Leather Subarmalis is finely stitched into form from 4-5 oz quality top grain vegetable tanned leather with an inside which is lined with suede for comfort. The shoulders are stitched together and it is laced at the sides with the included leather cords. Its size can be adjusted slightly by using only a single set of holes, or by creating entirely new lacing holes as there is a few inches of overlap on the sides.
A Subarmalis was the foundation of a proper Roman armored defense; it acted both as chafe protection from armor, as well as a padded barrier to absorb impacts on the armor itself. No Roman subarmalis examples have yet been found intact, but they can be seen in period depictions of Roman soldiery.
This leather subarmalis also functions well as a good leather armor piece for someone who wants the Roman soldier appearance without the weight and maintenance that comes with steel armor.
