A soldier bearing the title beneficiarius was exempted from certain military services, presumably in order to perform other specialised duties, such as seconded onto the staff of the provincial governor or onto the personal staff of the legionary legate. The beneficiarii were the orderlies of the senior officers and acted as their aides. This standard does not include a pole, but is yet another fine example of a Roman standard!
